Honorary President of Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) and CEO of Alliances for Global Sustainability (AGS), Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, will inaugurate the Annual EmiratesGBC Congress on September 22, 2021 under the theme 15 years of EmiratesGBC: From Green Buildings towards Sustainable Cities 2030. The Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) Congress will talk about the 15 impactful years of the Councils operations and its contribution to promoting green buildings and current aim at achieving the Sustainable Cities 2030 vision of the nation at its 10th annual edition at Pullman Dubai Creek City Centre.

The event will be held under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Climate Change & Environment, and with Majid Al Futtaim as the Platinum Partner, the 10th Annual EmiratesGBC Congress will provide a platform for international and regional experts to discuss the latest innovations in driving environmental sustainability, and act as a forum for networking and discussion between members and industry and government stakeholders.

To coincide with the World Green Building Week in September, this years Congress takes looks up at the national theme, Year of the 50th, and will be held under the overarching theme, 15 years of EmiratesGBC: From Green Buildings towards Sustainable Cities 2030.

As the world prepares for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November, the UAE continues to make great strides in its efforts to combat climate change. The 10th EmiratesGBC Congress, which takes places as we celebrate our nations golden jubilee, represents the UAEs commitment to tackling climate change. It provides stakeholders across the public and private sectors with the opportunity to discuss our way forward over the next 50 years. Ali Al Jassim, Chairperson, EmiratesGBC, said: As we mark a milestone this year with the 10th edition of the EmiratesGBC Congress, we are inspired by the words of our nations founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who observed: He who does not know his past cannot make best of his present and future, for it is from the past that we learn. As the nation strengthens its reserve to combat climate change, cut greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter by 2030, and achieve the goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the Congress will look at our achievements, current field of work and future strategies.

Among the highlighted topics to be discussed at the Congress include the impact of rapid population and urban growth on building sustainable cities and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the climate change narrative. The talk will also highlight the innovation and vision needed to achieve the goal of net zero carbon cities. A number of webinars will also be held in the run-up to the Congress, with a focus on different aspects of a sustainable built environment including embodied carbon, healthy cities and building resilience to climate change.

The main Congress will be a celebration of the UAEs built environment, featuring Green Building case studies and success stories from in the UAE. In subsequent sessions, the Congress will discuss the current trends and drivers influencing the sector as the world continues to recover from COVID-19, before looking ahead to 2030 as we pave the way to achieving net zero targets. Individuals and organisations that have supported EmiratesGBC and made a lasting impact will also be honoured at the event.
