Standing Up to Arthritis: MEAF’s World Arthritis Day Brings Patients and Experts Together

The Middle East Arthritis Foundation (MEAF), a leading non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and improving the lives of people living with arthritis, successfully hosted its World Arthritis Day (WAD) event at the Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai.

Under the theme “Arthritis Matters: Empowering Lives, Building Stronger Communities,” the event brought together over 200 patients, caregivers, and healthcare experts for a full day of education, wellness, and community engagement. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about arthritis, promote early diagnosis, and empower individuals through knowledge and support networks.

The event featured a rich program of educational and interactive sessions, including Yoga for Arthritis, a live Tai Chi therapy demonstration, and a dance session for joint health. Medical experts and nutritionists conducted informative talks covering treatment options, mental health management, and anti-inflammatory diets, along with fertility and pregnancy care for women living with arthritis.

One of the key highlights was the session “Not All Pain is Visible,” where experts emphasized the importance of empathy, mental wellness, and understanding the invisible challenges faced by arthritis patients. The day concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, offering participants a chance to connect directly with rheumatologists, share their stories, and exchange coping strategies.

Inspiring testimonies from patients reflected the event’s emotional impact. One young participant shared,

“I couldn’t walk just three months ago and had almost given up hope. Living with psoriatic arthritis for nine years has been tough, but with my mother’s support, my doctors, and this amazing group, I’m stronger than ever—both physically and emotionally.”

Dr. Humeira Badsha, Founding Member of the Middle East Arthritis Foundation, said:

“Today’s event was an inspiring reminder of the strength and determination of people living with arthritis. With one in five people in the UAE affected, awareness and early intervention are crucial. Events like these empower women, support patients through various life stages, and build a strong, informed community that uplifts one another.”

The free-to-attend sessions demonstrated MEAF’s commitment to accessible education and awareness. The Foundation continues to advocate for early diagnosis, advanced treatments, and holistic wellness approaches that reduce disability and improve the quality of life for arthritis patients across the region.

Beyond the annual celebration, MEAF maintains its mission year-round through the Monthly Arthritis Support Group, which meets every second Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Mubadala Health Dubai, Sunset Mall, Kite Beach. These informal gatherings offer a safe space for patients and caregivers to share experiences, learn lifestyle management techniques, and receive peer support.

Those who missed this year’s event are encouraged to join future sessions and become part of MEAF’s growing community of strength, resilience, and hope.
