SIG and Yellow Door Energy Inaugurate 2-Megawatt Solar Power Plant at Riyadh Factory Under MODON Patronage
Under the patronage of Eng. Majed Rafed Al-Argoubi, CEO of the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON), SIG, in partnership with Yellow Door Energy, inaugurated a 2-megawatt rooftop solar power plant at SIG’s aseptic carton factory in the Second Industrial City, Riyadh.
The inauguration ceremony brought together leading figures in sustainability and industry, including H.E. Yasmine Chatila Zwahlen, Ambassador of Switzerland to Saudi Arabia; Eng. Abdallah Al Obeikan, Chairman of the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and CEO of Obeikan Investment Group; and key SIG customers such as Almarai, Al Safi Danone, and Gulf Union.
The project marks a significant milestone in supporting the MODON Green Initiative, contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the Kingdom’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. The 2-megawatt installation, among the first industrial solar projects in the Kingdom to connect directly to the national grid, spans 8,000 square meters and features over 3,200 solar panels. It is expected to generate more than 3.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, reducing carbon emissions by 1,300 metric tons.
Supporting Saudi Arabia’s Sustainability Vision
H.E. Yasmine Chatila Zwahlen, Swiss Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, highlighted the collaborative spirit behind the project:
“This initiative exemplifies the strong partnership between Switzerland and Saudi Arabia in advancing sustainability and innovation. Seeing a Swiss company like SIG contribute to Saudi Arabia’s clean energy transition and Vision 2030 is inspiring. Together, we are building a more sustainable future.”
Eng. Majed Rafed Al-Argoubi, CEO of MODON, emphasized the broader impact:
“This project demonstrates our commitment to making Saudi Arabia’s industrial cities greener and more sustainable. Collaborating with industry leaders like SIG helps advance the MODON Green Initiative and the Kingdom’s Net Zero by 2060 goals.”
Eng. Abdallah Al Obeikan, Chairman of the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and CEO of Obeikan Investment Group, added:
“This milestone showcases the private sector’s growing role in renewable energy adoption. It reflects the progress of Saudi Arabia’s sustainability vision and encourages deeper collaboration among local and global partners.”
SIG and Yellow Door Energy: Advancing Climate+ Commitments
Eng. Abdelghany Eladib, President & General Manager for India, Middle East, and Africa at SIG, said:
“This project is a crucial step in accelerating SIG’s global Climate+ commitment. Partnering with Yellow Door Energy enables us to decarbonize our operations and support Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy goals under the Saudi Green Initiative.”
Eng. Hisham Alhegelan, CEO Middle East at Yellow Door Energy, remarked:
“We are proud to partner with SIG and MODON to bring renewable energy to Riyadh’s Second Industrial City. Through our solar lease model, we empower businesses to lower energy costs and carbon emissions, supporting the Kingdom’s Net Zero 2060 target.”
This project marks SIG’s second collaboration with Yellow Door Energy, following the successful installation of a 304-kilowatt solar power system in Dubai, UAE, which included rooftop and carport solar arrays, as well as an EV charging station.
Under the solar lease agreement, Yellow Door Energy finances, builds, and operates the solar plant, allowing SIG to focus on delivering sustainable packaging innovations. The initiative comes as Yellow Door Energy surpasses 1 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity generated across its regional portfolio, reinforcing both companies’ shared commitment to Saudi Arabia’s sustainable energy transition.
