Sharjah Extends Government Employee Probation Period to Nine Months

The Sharjah government has extended the probation period for new employees in the public sector from six months to nine months. The move is part of updated human resources regulations aimed at offering Emirati hires more time to demonstrate their professional competencies before being confirmed in their roles.

According to the revised guidelines, the additional three-month extension may be approved by the hiring entity and will take effect from the date of appointment. This change is designed to provide a longer assessment period to better evaluate employees’ performance and workplace adaptability.

Key Updates Under the New HR Regulations

  • Probation Period: Extended from 6 to 9 months

  • Effective From: Date of appointment

  • Extension Approval: Permitted by the hiring entity

  • Objective: Support the professional development of Emirati employees

In addition to the revised probation policy, the updated regulations also mandate the formation of several internal committees across government departments. These include committees focused on:

  • Emergency and crisis management

  • Handling employee complaints

  • Disciplinary reviews and procedures

Authorities believe that the reforms will enhance administrative efficiency, support a structured grievance redressal mechanism, and further strengthen governance within public sector institutions in Sharjah.
