Liwa Dates Festival Contributes to the Improvement of Environmental Awareness among its Visitors

Through its participation in the Liwa Date Festival (2014), the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi seeks to raise environmental awareness among the visitors of the Festival. The Agency is providing the public with a meticulous explanation of the need to reduce the use of groundwater, as an unsustainable source of irrigation. Groundwater, the Agency notes, remains one the most strategic resources in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The Liwa Dates Festival constitutes an ideal platform to raise awareness through the intensification of dialogue with farmers who are affected by the depletion of groundwater resources.

Groundwater is considered as one of the most important water resources in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Despite the increasing exploitation in the past years, groundwater is still the main water resource used in the Emirate, notably in the irrigation of farms, forests, some gardens, parks and green spaces.

The preservation of groundwater is one of the most important strategic priorities for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as it seeks to provide sustainable water stores in the long run. Taking into account the economic and social impacts on key sectors such as agriculture, Abu Dhabi is promoting a rational use of groundwater so as to reduce the rate of depletion of this precious resource.
