Heavy rainfall affected parts of the UAE on Wednesday as unstable weather conditions continued across the country, prompting the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) to issue orange and yellow alerts in areas at risk of showers and hazardous conditions.
The weather comes amid a period of extreme summer heat, with temperatures in some parts of the UAE reaching close to 50°C. The NCM has indicated that unsettled conditions could continue for several more days, bringing further chances of rainfall.
Al Ain Sees Heavy Rain and Strong Winds
Al Ain was among the areas affected by the latest weather conditions. Videos shared by Storm Centre showed heavy rainfall along Al Ain’s Nahil Road, while strong winds were also reported in the area.
The NCM urged residents to exercise caution, particularly when travelling or undertaking outdoor activities during periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.
Authorities advised motorists to drive carefully during rainfall and remain alert to sudden reductions in visibility caused by downdraft winds.
Residents Urged to Avoid Flood-Prone Areas
Residents have been advised to stay away from valleys, low-lying areas and locations vulnerable to flash flooding. Authorities also warned against attempting to cross flooded wadis.
People were further urged to avoid beaches, the sea and mountainous areas during unstable weather. Residents should also avoid walking through pooled water and should not allow children to play in areas where water has accumulated.
Drivers are encouraged to follow variable speed limits displayed on electronic signs and road guidance systems during periods of poor weather.
Authorities have also urged residents to monitor official weather updates and follow instructions issued by relevant agencies rather than relying on unverified information or circulating rumours.
Humidity Linked to Increased Rain Chances
The unusual rainfall comes during the UAE's peak summer period, when temperatures remain exceptionally high.
NCM meteorologist Ahmed Habib recently explained that the ongoing El Niño climate pattern could be contributing to increased atmospheric moisture across the UAE. Higher humidity can support the development of convective clouds, increasing the possibility of rainfall.
However, the increased humidity is not expected to significantly reduce overall temperatures. The UAE is likely to continue experiencing very high temperatures alongside periods of rain and unstable weather.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern that typically develops every two to seven years and can influence global atmospheric circulation, rainfall patterns and temperatures.
Heavy Rain Also Reported Across Oman
The unsettled conditions are not limited to the UAE. Oman has warned of potential flash floods as heavy rainfall affects parts of the Hajar Mountains along the UAE-Oman border.
Oman’s meteorological authorities have also forecast the possibility of hail in some areas and issued weather alerts as rainfall continues.
Residents across the UAE are advised to remain vigilant over the coming days, particularly in areas vulnerable to thunderstorms, strong winds and sudden flooding.
