FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem to Visit Japan to Highlight Role in Global Mobility Innovation and Motorsport Growth
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), will undertake a high-level visit to Japan this week, reinforcing the nation’s significant role in shaping the future of global mobility, automotive innovation, and motorsport development.
The visit underlines the FIA’s ongoing commitment to international collaboration with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), governments, mobility clubs, and national sport authorities (ASNs). As the world’s governing body for motorsport and the federation for mobility organisations, the FIA seeks to promote sustainable mobility solutions and inclusive motorsport growth.
Japan continues to be at the forefront of technological advancement and industrial development, with its mobility innovations setting global benchmarks. From its advanced public transportation networks and smart city initiatives to research in alternative fuels and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platforms, Japan’s leadership in mobility is both innovative and impactful.
The 2024 Japan Mobility Show attracted over 1.25 million visitors, spotlighting sustainability and encouraging cross-industry collaboration. In motorsport, Japan has seen a surge in participation, with the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) reporting over 200,000 licensed motorsport drivers—marking a 20% increase over the past five years. The 2025 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka also drew its highest attendance since 2006.
During his visit, Ben Sulayem will engage in high-level discussions with key figures including Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Koji Murofushi, Commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency, and Hiromasa Nakano, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
Hosted by the JAF, Ben Sulayem’s itinerary also includes a tour of the City Circuit and JAF Control Tower, highlighting Japan’s investment in motorsport infrastructure and urban racing concepts.
“Japan continues to be a beacon of technological leadership in the automotive sector, motorsport passion, and innovative mobility solutions that enhance quality of life,” said Ben Sulayem. “This visit presents an opportunity to strengthen our partnerships and align on shared goals for the global good.”
He added: “It also reflects the FIA’s broader mission to champion innovation, safety, and sustainability across both mobility and motorsport sectors. Japan’s industrial prowess, supportive governance, and deep-rooted sporting culture make it an invaluable partner in achieving these global ambitions.”
The visit aligns with the FIA’s overarching objective to drive progress in mobility and motorsport, ensuring both remain accessible, sustainable, and forward-looking worldwide.
