A business owner in Dubai can usually tell you how many enquiries came in last month. Very few can say how many people read a summary of their company inside an AI answer, weighed it against two competitors, and moved on without ever opening the website.

That second group is the one growing. For most service businesses in the UAE, the question of who gets contacted is now largely settled inside search results and AI assistants, before anyone reaches a company's own site.

Why first contact happens later than it used to

The sequence a customer follows before calling a company has shifted. Many informational and comparison searches can now open with an AI Overview that summarizes an answer above the traditional results. Google Maps carries the comparison for anything local, complete with reviews, photos, opening hours and whatever the last few customers had to say. Beyond Google, a growing share of people begin in an assistant such as ChatGPT and ask the question in plain language instead of typing keywords.

None of these are new on their own. What has changed is how much of the decision is already finished by the time any of them ends. A customer reaches a company's website holding a shortlist of two or three names. The website is no longer making the introduction. It is confirming an impression formed somewhere else.

The shortlist gets assembled in two languages

In the UAE this happens across two search behaviors running in parallel. The same service is searched in English by one part of the market and in Arabic by another, and the two sets of results are not the same. A company publishing only in English is at a significant disadvantage across Arabic-language searches. Even where Google can surface or translate English content, businesses with genuinely useful Arabic pages have far more opportunity to match Arabic search intent directly.

The effect is easy to miss, because absence produces no data. A ranking drop shows up in a report. A query a business was never eligible for appears nowhere at all.

What this changes for a business

The practical consequence is that a company is now described to its customers by systems it does not control, using information it did not necessarily supply. A search engine assembles that description from the website, the Google Business Profile, directory listings, reviews and anything else it can verify. An AI assistant does something similar, with less tolerance for ambiguity and no obligation to show its working.

For most service companies, this is the working definition of SEO in Dubai today. It means making sure the information those systems depend on is accurate, structured, consistent across sources, and available in both languages a customer might use. Less about persuading an algorithm, more about closing the gaps that cause a business to be summarized badly or left out of the summary entirely.

Where businesses misread their own numbers

Most reporting has not caught up with any of this. It still centers on a single figure.

"Clicks are the metric everyone defends," says Wasim Fayyad, SEO Team Lead at Lucidly, a Dubai-based development and digital marketing agency. "If Search Console is up, the client is happy. If it's down, it's a crisis. But a question answered inside an AI Overview, or inside ChatGPT, was still a customer forming an opinion about the business. It just never became a click. Clicks measure traffic growth. They don't measure whether you were in the room when the decision got made."

The gap has a cost attached. A business watching a stable click count can reasonably conclude that nothing is wrong, while losing ground at the earlier stage where the shortlist is actually built.

Four things worth watching alongside clicks

Branded search volume. The cleanest available signal. When people encounter a company upstream, in an AI answer, a listing or a mention, a share of them will search the name directly rather than click through from a generic query. Branded searches rising while non-branded clicks stay flat usually means visibility is working somewhere that isn't being measured.

Impressions that produce no clicks, read by position. This only means something when it is segmented. High impressions with no clicks at position eighteen is a ranking problem and nothing more. The same pattern at position two or three, on a query that used to bring in customers, is the signal worth investigating. The answer is being resolved before anyone reaches the result.

Whether the business is cited inside AI answers. Not whether AI Overviews are appearing more often, which is true for almost every query and says nothing about any particular company. There is no native Google report that isolates a company's citations or visibility inside AI answers. It takes a fixed set of questions, tested manually or through a third-party tool, and repeated on a schedule so the results can be compared month to month.

Referrals from AI tools. Traffic from assistants increasingly passes a referrer, so it can be identified in analytics rather than assumed. Checking for those sources directly is more reliable than watching direct traffic, which collects everything that cannot be attributed and is too noisy to read on its own.

The point is not that clicks stopped mattering

They still do, particularly for local and commercial searches, where someone looking for a service nearby still clicks through and still calls. The shift is narrower than the headlines suggest and concentrated in questions that can be answered without a visit.

What has changed is that the click is no longer the first moment a business is evaluated. A company measuring only the visit is optimizing the last step of a process it may already be losing several steps earlier.

Common questions

Do AI Overviews mean SEO no longer matters in the UAE?
No, but what it consists of has moved. The work is less about ranking a page and more about making sure the information a search engine or assistant uses to describe a business is accurate, structured and verifiable across sources.

Should a UAE business publish in Arabic as well as English?
It depends on who the customers are. For businesses serving Arabic-speaking residents, an English-only site is not competing weakly on those searches. It is generally not competing at all.

How can a business tell whether it appears in AI answers?
By testing a consistent set of real customer questions in the assistants its audience uses, recording the results, and repeating the test on a schedule. Nothing in standard analytics reports this automatically.

What should a business measure instead of clicks?
Alongside clicks rather than instead of them: branded search volume, impressions that don't convert to clicks at strong positions, presence inside AI answers, and identifiable referrals from AI tools.
