SIG and Nutrition from Water unveil algae-based yogurt alternative at Gulfood Manufacturing 2025

SIG, a global leader in aseptic packaging, has partnered with Nutrition from Water (NXW) to introduce a groundbreaking yogurt alternative made with microalgae protein, unveiled at Gulfood Manufacturing 2025. The collaboration marks a major step toward addressing global nutrition gaps through sustainable, protein-rich food solutions.

The new product — a fermented coconut milk yogurt alternative enriched with 4% NXW microalgae protein — will be showcased at SIG’s booth (C4-4, Hall 4) during the event, which runs from November 4–6 at Dubai World Trade Centre. The innovation delivers a nutrient-dense, shelf-stable beverage designed to provide affordable and accessible nutrition, particularly for underserved communities in rapidly growing economies.

The partnership between SIG and NXW began through MISTA, a San Francisco-based global food innovation platform uniting leading companies in food, ingredients, and technology. With the world’s population projected to reach 10 billion by 2050, both companies see sustainable nutrition as a critical global priority.

By integrating NXW’s Marine Whey™ microalgae protein technology with SIG’s advanced aseptic carton and pouch packaging, the two companies are developing solutions that eliminate the need for refrigeration while maintaining freshness, safety, and nutritional quality. The aim is to deliver both basic nutrition for low-income consumers and premium protein-enriched options for broader markets.

Federico Duarte, CEO at NXW, said:

“Our partnership with SIG allows us to look at nutrition as a complete system — from biotechnology to packaging and consumer access. Together, we can unlock world-class nutrition for everyone, everywhere.”

Christoph Wegener, Chief Markets Officer at SIG, added:

“Addressing the global nutrition gap has never been more urgent. By combining innovative algae-based proteins with our aseptic packaging, we’re ensuring that nutritious, sustainable products reach those who need them most.”

Abdelghany Eladib, President & General Manager, India, Middle East and Africa at SIG, noted:

“At Gulfood Manufacturing 2025, we’re proud to showcase this innovation as part of our mission to close the nutrition gap with sustainable solutions. Together with our partners, we’re turning innovation into impact.”

The SIG–NXW collaboration underscores the growing momentum toward plant and algae-based nutrition, setting a new benchmark for sustainable, accessible food innovation in the Middle East and beyond.
