Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation to host 'Literacy Challenge Forum 2020' on Arab Literacy Day

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MPRF) is organizing the inaugural 'Literacy Challenge Forum' on Arab Literacy Day on January 8, 2020, MPRF President His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed At the behest of Rashid al-Maktoum.

The Foundation serves as a comprehensive platform to bring together experts and stakeholders involved in literacy efforts around the world to exchange knowledge and expertise, Promote collaboration and teamwork, provide successful solutions to eradicate illiteracy in the Arab world, and highlight experiences that inspire individuals and organizations in the fight against illiteracy.

The 'Literacy Challenge Forum 2020' is on the agenda of the Literacy Challenge 2020 winners, to organize workshops to express and explore recent research on literacy and regional and international experiences, and work to develop practices that are tailored to the peculiarities of the Arab region.

Jamal bin Huwaireb, CEO of MBRF, stressed that Dubai has led cities across the globe in launching initiatives and events that support education and nurture human beings, it is guided by its brilliant leadership vision and strategies to prioritize education and empower individuals to qualify.

Literacy in the Arab region is a real challenge that forces all of us - institutions and countries - to work together, he said. In view of this, we have sought to extend the scope of the Literacy Challenge from the award given to those who have made significant achievements in the field, for a large gathering of thought leaders and experts to exchange ideas and recruit more organizations and individuals in the fight against illiteracy and the creation of knowledge communities around the Arab world.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation closed the admission process for the second edition of the Literacy Challenge in August 2019, announcing the switch to the final stage, winners will be selected by a judging panel consisting of seven experts and academics. The winners will then be declared on January 8, 2020.

Literacy Challenge 2018 The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has won the International Institutions category award for the best literacy programs around the world.
Meanwhile, Egypt's Ministry of Education has won in the governments category for its important role in modernizing the pre-university education system in the country. In the Individuals category, lastly, Dr Al Shifa Abdulkader Hassan, Director of the UNESCO / UNESCO Office for Women in Science and Technology at Sudan University of Science and Technology, Director of the UNESCO / ISESCO Office for Women in Science and Technology at Sudan University of Science and Technology, won the award for her role in establishing a comprehensive scientific and technical literacy program for women in Sudan.

According to figures from the Arab League Education, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), the rate of illiteracy among 15-year-olds and adults has reached 21% in 2018, compared to the global average of 13.6%. In some Arab countries the rate will increase further in light of the conditions surrounding education.

Statistics have revealed that the difficult educational conditions in some Arab countries - brought on by crises and tensions - have resulted in 13.5 million Arab children out of formal education, including abandoned and never enrolled children.

Statistics show that among Arab men, literacy reached 14.6%, while 25.9% of Arab women were illiterate. Some countries in the region suffer from an illiteracy rate of 60% to 80% among women.
