Budding talents enter final stage of Reel Cinemas Future Filmmakers Summer Camp

The cameras are rolling and it is action time for young film enthusiasts as they enter the final stages in realising their dream of making a film through their participation at the Reel Cinemas Future Filmmakers Summer Camp.

A first-of-its-kind initiative in the UAE organised by Emaar Retail, the premier provider of high quality entertainment and leisure choices, the Future Filmmakers Summer Camp is witnessing remarkable interest from talented children.

Organised in partnership with Murdoch University, the camp is aimed at building the next generation of film talent in the UAE. It covers the techniques and craft of making films with the first and second educational modules taking them through an Introduction to Filmmaking; Screening Short Films; Story Creation; Story Pitch; Script Writing; Short List & Storyboard; and shooting in The Dubai Mall.

The participants are currently capturing footage for their short film using various equipment provided and applying the techniques and theories in filmmaking that they have learnt through the first lessons at the Future Filmmakers Summer Camp. They were taught how to operate the Nikon DSLR full HD cameras as well as vital principles of cinematography covering exposure, ISO, shutter speed, sound management, focusing correcting and proper use of tripods. They are also being trained on proper use of lighting, correcting framing characters. Promoting team spirit among the participants by training them to work in teams, the participants are also instructed on character motivation and behaviour on screen, and the importance of rehearsals.

During the final modules, students are learning to engage in specialised workshops such as Equipment & Lightning Operation; Setup & Framing; Tips on Directing, managing actors & film devices; Review of the Footage, colour grading, graphics, non-linear editing and exporting in a high quality format. They will visit a professional television studio to spark their interest in the media sector and to learn the protocols of contemporary TV production.

The third module will be conducted at Reel Cinemas, The Dubai Mall from 9am to 1:30pm; Sunday to Thursday, and the final module, covering post-production works, will be taught at the state-of-the-art post-production studio and media centre at Murdoch University campus in Dubai International Academic City (Block 10, 4th floor). By the end of the fourth week, the participants would have gone through the entire experience of completing a film from start to finish.

The participants have been tasked with making a short film in groups; while the young ones can do the shoot on their smartphone, the older children are using the latest DSLRs sponsored by Nikon. The edit and post-production works will be held at Murdoch University.

The Summer Camp will conclude with a gala ceremony on September 3, 2015, where the films made by the children will be screened. The young filmmakers will also walk the red carpet at the event which is to be attended by VIPs and industry professionals, who will present awards in various categories. The films to be screened during the gala evening will be evaluated by an expert panel of judges.
