Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre expands reference laboratory for infectious diseases, boosts emergency preparedness

The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) has announced the expansion of its Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases (RLID-AD), marking a major step forward in strengthening the emirate’s ability to detect, monitor, and respond to infectious disease threats.

The expansion enhances Abu Dhabi’s public health infrastructure, reinforces its emergency preparedness, and supports its position as a global leader in health security and epidemic response.

The launch event was attended by senior officials, including Dr Rashed Obaid Al Suwaidi, General Director of ADPHC; Rashed Al Qubaisi, Group Chief Operating Officer at PureHealth; Arindam Haldar, Chief Executive Officer of PureLab; Dr Rawya Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of Operations at PureLab; and Bader Al Qubaisi, Chief Executive Officer of SEHA – Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC).

Located at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and operated by PureLab, part of the PureHealth group, the expanded laboratory significantly advances molecular diagnostics and infectious disease testing capabilities. The upgrade streamlines processes from sample reception to advanced analysis and genetic sequencing, while substantially increasing testing capacity to support rapid diagnosis and effective disease surveillance during epidemic or pandemic situations.

The expansion also includes the activation of a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) mobile laboratory trailer, enabling on-site testing and analysis in outbreak areas. This mobile unit enhances rapid response capabilities and strengthens Abu Dhabi’s surveillance and containment measures during public health emergencies.

Designed and manufactured in line with international standards, the BSL-3 unit reinforces the emirate’s laboratory biosafety framework and contributes to overall epidemic preparedness.

Dr Al Suwaidi said the expansion represents a significant leap in strengthening Abu Dhabi’s health security. He noted that investment in advanced laboratory infrastructure and biosafety capabilities ensures the emirate remains at the forefront of epidemic preparedness and response, while driving innovation and collaboration across the public health ecosystem.

“With the integration of advanced molecular testing and the establishment of a BSL-3 unit, we are now equipped to deliver faster and more accurate diagnostics, reduce reliance on outsourcing, and support better resource management and evidence-based decision-making,” he said. “This milestone reinforces our vision of building a healthy, safe, and resilient society supported by world-class public health systems.”

The Reference Laboratory for Infectious Diseases is recognised by the World Health Organization as a National Influenza Centre and also conducts testing for measles, rubella, and other pathogens. More than 50 per cent of its workforce comprises UAE national professionals, highlighting strong local expertise in this critical field.

The expansion forms part of Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy to strengthen health system preparedness and resilience, ensuring effective responses to infectious disease threats and safeguarding the health of residents and visitors across the emirate.
