Abu Dhabi Launches Solar-Powered Rest Areas for Delivery Riders

In a move to promote road safety and improve working conditions for delivery bike riders, the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) under the Department of Municipalities and Transport has inaugurated two new eco-friendly rest areas in Rabdan and Shakhbout City.

The initiative, launched in partnership with the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an, forms part of the wider “Summer Without Accidents” campaign. It aims to ensure the wellbeing of delivery riders by offering safe and sustainable spaces to rest during their shifts.

A Step Towards Sustainability and Safety

The newly opened rest stops are solar-powered and constructed in line with eco-friendly building standards, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to sustainable urban development. By integrating green technology with practical infrastructure, the project underscores the emirate’s focus on both environmental and human welfare.

“These facilities reflect our efforts to support frontline workers while advancing Abu Dhabi’s sustainability goals,” said a spokesperson from the ITC. “Ensuring rider safety and comfort is a key part of promoting traffic safety across the emirate.”

Rider-Centric Features

Each rest stop is equipped with:

  • Shaded and air-conditioned seating areas

  • Cold drinking water

  • Charging stations for electronic devices

These features aim to prevent heat-related stress and reduce accident risks by allowing riders to rest comfortably between deliveries, especially during the peak summer months.

The initiative has been welcomed by riders and transport sector stakeholders alike, as a progressive step toward better working conditions and a safer road environment in Abu Dhabi.
