UAE Declares January 1 Public Holiday, Announces Remote Work on January 2

The UAE federal authority has announced the official New Year holiday arrangements for 2026, declaring Thursday, January 1, 2026, as a paid public holiday for federal government employees. The decision supports the country’s ongoing efforts to promote work–life balance while maintaining operational continuity across government services.

According to the official circular, Friday, January 2, 2026, will be observed as a remote workday for federal government employees. Staff whose roles require on-site presence will continue to report to their workplaces as usual, ensuring essential services remain uninterrupted.

The announcement marks the first official public holiday of 2026 and comes as residents and visitors prepare for large-scale New Year celebrations across the country.

Nationwide celebrations planned

Across the UAE, emirates are gearing up for festive events and fireworks displays. Ras Al Khaimah is preparing a 15-minute fireworks spectacle stretching across six kilometres of coastline, supported by more than 2,300 drones, lasers and pyrotechnics. Authorities are also aiming to set a Guinness World Record for the largest single firework ever launched.

In Dubai, New Year’s Eve celebrations will feature fireworks, drone shows, concerts and beachside parties at popular destinations including Global Village, Atlantis The Palm, and Bluewaters Island. Displays are expected to begin early in the evening and culminate at midnight.

Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Festival will host an extended New Year programme, including a 62-minute fireworks and drone show in Al Wathba. The celebration will unfold in five stages starting at 8pm and conclude at midnight, alongside cultural and heritage performances presented by participating countries and partners.

The federal authority extended its best wishes to the UAE leadership, government entities and residents, while urging organisations to comply with the directive and ensure smooth operations during the holiday period.
