The rising global popularity of Ayurveda

Ayurveda, which has historical roots in the Indian subcontinent, is a popular alternative medicine system with so many followers from all across the globe. Kerala is home to a number of Ayurveda hospitals and resorts. Anzi's Ayurveda Healthcare Centre is one such hospital located in Wayanad. Dr. Anzi Mohammed, Founder, Managing Director, and Chief Physician of Anzis Ayurveda Health Care Centre, explains why he chose Wayanad as his base. Wayanad is the most ideal location for Ayurveda hospitals simply because it boasts of a rich history of Ayurvedic medicines, primarily because of the abundance of spices and herbs that grow in this area. He adds that its because of the availability of spices and herbs that foreigners head to Wayanad for Ayurvedic treatments. Why Ayurveda? The popularity of Ayurveda is steadily growing post Covid with people from all over the world showing more faith in this medicine system. Majority of the people suffering from various kinds of diseases understand the limited scope of the reductionist view of western medicine and trying to explore the holistic view and approach of Ayurveda, says Dr. Anzi, adding that according to researches, every third death in the world is due to medical error or due to the adverse effect of the modern medicines. Majority of the people getting treated for one disease condition ends up suffering from one or the other disease as the side effect of the medicine. Hence Ayurvedic view of correcting the body to correct a disease is finding a lot of acceptance across the world. Also limited or negligible side effects of Ayurvedic treatments is also considered as one of the reasons. Ayurveda is a also a way of life. It gives primary importance to protect and maintain the health of a healthy individual, with proper lifestyle, diet and if needed treatments, says Dr. Anzi. How does it work? Ayurveda believes in holistic healing, the overall correction of the body physical and mental prerequisite in treating any specific disease also. Personalized/customized approach is the hall mark of any Ayurvedic treatment protocol. Since each person is different from one another, treatment should also be personalized accordingly, says Dr. Anzi. As Ayurveda is based on holistic healing mind and body coordination has to be achieved in treating any disease. Hence any treatment protocol in Ayurveda addresses mind and body together. Ayurveda works on the principle of achieving harmony or balance of 3 vital humors Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) to maintain health. The imbalance of same 3 vital humors in the body create diseases. So any Ayurvedic treatment protocol targets/corrects the physical and mental aspect of disease, explains Dr. Anzi. Treatment methods Anzi's Ayurveda Healthcare Centre is a classical Ayurvedic resort that specializes in Panchakarma therapy (Detox/ Cleansing Treatment) in treating most of the complicated diseases including Auto immune diseases, Progressive Neurological conditions, Cancer etc. We also specialize in Kerala style of Panchakarma treatments which uses extensive and intense oil therapies to achieve detoxification, says Dr. Anzi. Pancha Mahabhoothas Vata, Pitta and Kapha are the three types of Doshas or primary functional energies in the body. Vata is related to wind. Pitta is related to fire and Kapha relates to water. These Doshas are related to the elements of nature. It is commonly believed that there are five elements of nature. It is called Pancha Mahabhoothas. According to Ayurveda, these three regulatory principles or Doshas are important for health; because when they are in a balanced state the body is healthy and when imbalanced; the body has diseases. Ayurveda holds that each human possesses a unique combination of Doshas, explains Dr. Anzi. Ayurveda teaches that the origin of most diseases is found in either an exogenous or endogenous dosha imbalance or an inherent or acquired weakness of tissues. The disease process is a reaction between the three doshas and dhathus and is influenced by the environment. There are very precise methods for understanding the disease process before all signs of the disease are manifested. An Ayurvedic practitioner can determine the nature of the disease by examining bodily reactions and for this, he mainly depends on Ashtasthana pareeksha. In Ayurveda, the human body perceives attributes of experiences as 20 Guna. Surgery and surgical instruments are employed. It is believed that building a healthy metabolic system, attaining good digestion and proper excretion leads to vitality. Ayurveda also focuses on exercise, yoga meditation, and massage. Thus body, mind and spirit/consciousness need to be addressed both individually and in unison for health to ensue, says Dr. Anzi. Importance of yoga in Ayurveda First and foremost, its important to understand that yoga and Ayurveda are interrelated. Together, they include healing disciplines in the body. Dr. Anzi says, While the primary objective of Ayurveda is to rejuvenate the body, yoga essentially deals with the purification of mind and consciousness. The importance of yoga in Ayurveda is that it provides the spiritual and psychological basis for Ayurveda and its higher applications. He adds that it is important to combine yoga and Ayurveda for optimum results in various treatment methods. Anzi's Ayurveda Healthcare Centre offers treatment methods that combine yoga and Ayurveda effectively. As Ayurveda and Yoga are interrelated, they together encompass healing disciplines in the body. On the one hand, Ayurveda rejuvenates the body; on the other, Yoga deals with the purification of mind and consciousness. Thus, together they both complement and embrace each other, concludes Dr. Anzi who has over 18 years of experience in the field of Ayurveda.
