Solar freight terminal, 'green' track: How Etihad Rail drives sustainability

Etihad Rail is taking significant steps to ensure sustainability across its rail network, including the solarisation of its first freight terminal, planned for completion by the end of 2025. The move aims to pave the way for future terminals and passenger stations powered by cleaner energies, aligning with the UAE’s net zero agenda.

Speaking at the Global Rail conference in Abu Dhabi, Adhraa Almansoori, Director of Public Policy and Sustainability at Etihad Rail, explained that the company prioritises working with suppliers and service providers who share a strong sustainability focus. “We want to ensure that not only our trips but also the services provided across the logistics chain are sustainable,” she said.

Green corridor initiatives

Etihad Rail is exploring a ‘green corridor’ concept along its tracks, which includes planting vegetation to mitigate sand movement and enhance the surrounding environment. While still in research and development, the initiative aims to identify plant species that can sustain themselves without damaging infrastructure. “We are collaborating with stakeholders to determine the best use of the land next to the tracks,” Almansoori said.

Environmental protection and carbon reduction

In every area where the railway track was laid, Etihad Rail worked closely with local authorities to protect local flora and fauna, crossing deserts and mountains while coordinating with municipalities and environmental agencies in each emirate.

The company highlighted the environmental benefits of rail transport, noting that each freight train removes up to 300 trucks from roads. Some customers have cut their carbon emissions by as much as 80% by using rail instead of road transport. Etihad Rail also issues Carbon Avoidance Certificates, detailing CO₂ reductions achieved through rail usage. “By 2050, the railway industry is expected to reduce emissions from land transportation by 21%, equivalent to 8.2 million tons annually across our operations,” Almansoori said.

Through a combination of solar-powered terminals, eco-conscious service partnerships, and green corridor research, Etihad Rail is demonstrating a comprehensive approach to sustainable transport in the UAE.
