New UAE AI turns raw data into business insights without expensive experts

In an effort to make data driven decisions more accessible, researchers at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in the UAE have developed a novel AI platform named Data Wise. This tool aims to help small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) convert their raw data into actionable, business relevant insights, without needing to employ full time data scientists.

Why it’s needed:

  • There’s a growing demand in the UAE for data scientists and analysts, but many SMEs can’t afford the salaries or overhead of specialist roles.

  • According to reports, data science is among the top 10 skill shortages in the UAE.

  • Although 74% of SMEs in the UAE are optimistic about business growth, many lack the analytical tools to support key expansion decisions.

What data wise does:

  • User friendly input: businesses can upload various forms of data, for example, purchase histories or survey responses; then set their goals (e.g., understanding customer churn, optimizing inventory).

  • Automated process: the AI platform handles the entire analytical workflow, hypothesis generation, pattern detection, business recommendations, all without requiring technical expertise.

  • Plain language insights: insights are delivered in interpretable, understandable language for decision makers rather than just charts or dashboards intended for data specialists.

How it performs vs traditional experts:

  • Data Wise has been benchmarked against top data science solutions (including datasets from Kaggle) spanning use cases like customer behavior modelling, health risks, and pricing strategy. It outperformed many expert built solutions in those tests.

  • It also speeds up what would traditionally be a weeks long project into minutes, because the system carries out many tasks in parallel, tests hypotheses automatically, and filters for reliability.

What it means for SMEs and related sectors:

  • For SMEs, the cost savings are potentially large. Hiring a data scientist could cost above AED 300,000/year, whereas Data Wise offers similar analytical power at a fraction of that.

  • Sectors likely to benefit most include retail, healthcare, manufacturing. Use cases such as predicting customer churn, optimizing inventory, and budget allocation are specifically mentioned.

Where it stands and what’s next:

  • Data Wise is currently available as a working demo, hosted on Amazon Web Services.

  • Further development is underway via the MBZUAI Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center, with plans for full commercial deployment.

Implications & challenges:

The development is promising, but some things to watch out for:

  • Data quality will still be crucial: garbage in → garbage out. SMEs will need to have adequately clean, relevant data.

  • Trust & interpretability: while providing plain language insights helps, businesses will still need to validate insights and understand the limits of automated systems.

  • Privacy & regulation: handling customer data, health data, etc., comes with legal obligations; AI platforms must ensure compliance.

  • Competition & differentiation: as more tools emerge, platforms will compete on accuracy, user interface, integrations, and cost.

Data Wise represents a significant stride toward democratizing access to advanced data analytics in the UAE. For SMEs that previously couldn’t afford or interact with data science experts, it promises speed, affordability, and actionable insights. If successful, it could help many businesses leverage their own data to grow and improve operations in ways that were formerly the exclusive domain of larger companies with big analytics teams.
