Dubai RTA Launches Mandatory Online Booking System for Vehicle Testing to Cut Queues, Improve Efficiency
Vehicle owners in Dubai are experiencing shorter wait times and more streamlined service at testing centres, thanks to a new mandatory online appointment system launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Effective June 2, online booking is now required for all annual vehicle inspections at 27 testing centres citywide, with walk-in customers charged a Dh100 service fee.
The initiative, following a successful six-month pilot at Al Qusais and Al Barsha centres, has already reduced waiting times by 46% and cut congestion at high-traffic facilities that were previously operating at over 80% capacity.
For motorists like Syed Azeez, the new system was a game-changer. “Last year, I waited nearly an hour. This time, I booked online and was out in 20 minutes,” said Azeez, who completed testing at the Shamil Vehicle Testing Centre in Muhaisnah. “I renewed insurance, paid fines, and registered the car—all in five minutes using the RTA app.”
Streamlined Experience for Working Professionals
Riya Joseph, a marketing executive from Al Nahda, praised the process for saving time and eliminating stress. “As a full-time professional, I can’t afford to stand in queues. This system is fast and extremely well-organised,” she said, noting that she also saved on fuel, as her engine didn’t have to idle during a long wait.
Smooth Process Even at Previously Crowded Centres
For Sameer Akram, a Sharjah resident and outdoor sales executive, the updated process at the often-busy Al Qusais Tasjeel Centre was seamless. “I drove in at my scheduled time, finished the inspection in 15 minutes, and completed the rest on the app in under 30 minutes total,” he shared. “The system has eliminated what used to be a stressful, time-consuming chore.”
Challenges for Uninformed Drivers
Not all motorists were aware of the new requirements. Asgar Rehman, a car reseller and frequent visitor to testing centres, was caught off guard and had to wait 40 minutes just to book a slot. “I wish there was an alert on the RTA app. I would have planned better,” he said, suggesting more communication about the change.
Exception and Future Outlook
Currently, the Tasjeel Hatta centre remains the only location where appointments are not mandatory. The RTA believes the new system will continue to enhance operational efficiency and improve customer satisfaction, while supporting the city’s smart mobility initiatives.
