DEWA plans special expedition to the Amazon Rainforest

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will be sending some of their staff members on a special expedition to the Amazon Rainforest in Peru in May 2016. The move is part of DEWA's ongoing efforts to achieve its vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility, and raise awareness about environmental issues, particularly conserving natural resources and minimizing carbon emissions.

The expedition, set up for May, was prepared based upon the success of DEWA's last exploration to Antarctica, which was part of the 2041 International Antarctic Expedition initiative. The expedition intends to highlight the effects of global warming, raise awareness concerning the importance of preserving Antarctica and to stop significant companies from drilling and mining in the Antarctic, by the time the international protection procedure expires in 2041.

"DEWA strongly supports the Dubai Plan 2021, and the long-term national Green Economy for Sustainable Development effort, introduced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, making the UAE a pioneer in the field of environmental awareness," stated HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.

Al Tayer described that Peru was the destination of choice because of the clearly-visible results of climate modification within the Amazonian rainforest. He likewise pointed out that the exploration intends to study the effects of environment modification on biodiversity, ecosystems and the inhabitants of the Amazon.

"DEWA takes concern in contributing favorably towards the results of environment change and is fully-committed to establishing their employees and expanding their understanding on the subject. Sustainability is a major part of DEWA's federal government and public identity. Staff interest to take part in this exploration reflects their commitment as ambassadors to environmental issues and their desire to raise awareness on the importance of maintaining our natural resources, for generations to come," added Al Tayer.

"The expedition will run for 12 days and will focus on 3 specific areas in Peru. These include the desert coast, the cloud forests of the Andes and the lowland rainforest. As soon as returned from the journey, the participating workers will sign up with the ranks of currently existing Climate Change Champions and share the knowledge they gained from the expedition, with the general public, and other DEWA staff members. Through this initiative, DEWA promotes a culture of sustainability among employees," Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President for Strategy and Business Development at DEWA.

DEWA is dedicated to meeting all needs and requirements to protect the security and health of its staff members during their exploration to the Amazon Rainforest, consisting of required medical vaccines. DEWA sends out staff members to participate in environment change programs around the globe yearly, as part of its Climate Change Champions programme. Throughout the initial year of the programme, DEWA sent out 5 staff members to Antarctica to take part in the Leadership on the Edge Programme, which is arranged by the 2041 International Antarctic Expedition to promote sustainability among youth and to encourage them making to the right choices in the conservation of natural resources.
