ZPMC, Vodafone, China Mobile and Huawei Publish 5G Smart Port White Paper

At the 2019 Globe Mobile Broadband Forum (MBPF 2019), the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company (ZPMC), Vodafone, China Mobile and Huawei have unveiled a new 5G Smart Port white paper. The White Paper provides an in-depth description of 5G use cases in building an automation and intelligent port aimed at accelerating application research and project commercialization.

As the center of modern transportation, ports play an important role in promoting international trade. According to related statistics, about 90% of global trade relies on marine traffic. Lynchpin's performance of the port industry. With heavy labor intensity and insufficient personnel, traditional ports rely on human resources to operate container cranes in harsh ports. As a result, the rapid growth of global maritime traffic cannot meet demand. Port automation and intelligent reconstruction have become the main objectives of the industry.

With 5G Gear Up, thanks to its low latency, large bandwidth, and high reliability, it will provide a new communications solution for 5G port equipment and provide new impetus for smart port reconstruction. Based on the experience of ZPMC and Huawei, optimizing container transfer efficiency is a key service requirement for ports and is the first priority scenario for the Rubber-Tired Canteen (RTG) crane. With 5G's large bandwidth capability, real-time transmission of high definition (HD) videos can be realized, and 5G's low latency, remote real-time control in terms of programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Operators can complete canteen crane operations (such as accurate movement of cranes or lifting equipment and container picking) remotely from the central control room. An operator can control multiple cantilever cranes when working in a favorable environment, which greatly improves work efficiency.

Additionally, 5G can provide convenient and low-cost wireless network connections for many applications, such as autonomous driving (AGV) and Intelligent Guided Vehicle (IGV), Video management in port. Together with Edge Computing and AI, 5G helps synchronize and integrate port devices and production systems, improving intelligence and operational efficiency.

The 5G product line will not only enhance the revolutionary experience for consumers, it will also accelerate the digitization, automation and intelligent transformation of vertical industries, said Du Yeqing, vice president of Huaweis 5G product line. Apart from providing high-quality 5G network connections with global operators, Huawei expects to collaborate with global ecosystem partners to develop new opportunities.

Once this white report is released, Huawei will work with ZPMC, Vodafone and China Mobile to develop more effective solutions for port customers that develop technologies such as AI, cloud computing, big data and IoT.

Additional highlights of MBBF 2019
During MBBF 2019, Huawei also hosted the 3rd Open Site Industry Circle to promote policy support for site approval and site ecosystem development while unlocking the necessary device information. The move is aimed at helping industry partners to design public utilities to accommodate 5G base stations.

The joint announcement of Sunrise and Huawei 5G interior lineups at the event has been spotted in many places, including Sunrise stores, hotels and an exhibition hall. This is the first batch of commercial 5G internal networks in Switzerland and Europe using the Huawei 5G Lampsite solution.
