UiPath has launched UiPath Cartographer, a new product designed to help enterprises capture and organise the operational knowledge behind their business processes and turn it into an actionable view of how work is actually performed.

The company said Cartographer creates a “Map of Work” — a living and governed view of an enterprise process that brings together information such as documents, process steps, business rules and exceptions.

The product is intended to reduce the reliance on interviews, presentations and outdated process documents that are often used to understand how work is performed before automation or artificial intelligence projects begin.

Capturing operational knowledge

According to UiPath, organisations have invested heavily in mapping and structuring business data, including information relating to customers, invoices, claims and contracts. However, operational knowledge about how employees use that information often remains distributed across documents, spreadsheets, conversations and individual experience.

This can include the rules employees follow, decisions made in unusual situations and the actions taken when a process does not proceed as expected.

UiPath said Cartographer is designed to bring this information together into a structured Map of Work that reflects the operational context of a process and can be used to identify opportunities for process improvement and automation.

The product uses guided conversations to help business analysts capture process knowledge instead of relying solely on lengthy interviews and manually prepared documentation. It can synthesise information from different systems and formats and align the resulting process map with business objectives.

A governed view of business processes

The Map of Work is designed to serve as a customer-owned source of information about how a process operates, with a designated owner responsible for approving changes.

UiPath said the map can be used to generate design documents and specifications for automation projects. The approach is intended to keep process documentation and the resulting automations aligned as changes are made.

As processes run, employee decisions and judgment calls can also be captured and presented as proposed changes to the map. The designated owner can then approve or reject those changes rather than allowing the process definition to change automatically.

Cartographer operates on the UiPath Platform, allowing it to use the platform's existing identity, security and governance capabilities.

Three ways to build a Map of Work

UiPath Cartographer offers several approaches for organisations looking to map their processes.

Prebuilt Maps: These are based on UiPath's experience with industry and function-specific processes, including areas such as loan origination, healthcare claims review and source-to-pay. The maps are supplied with process structures and configurations.

Process Atlas: This provides a curated library of detailed process maps across industries. The library includes elements such as case plans, key performance indicators, benchmarks, policies and rules.

Build your own: Organisations with highly specific or closely governed processes can use Cartographer to capture their proprietary processes and create a blueprint for automation and improvement.

Connecting process maps with automation

Once a process has been mapped, enterprises can use the resulting information to develop agents, workflows and automations on the UiPath Platform.

These automations can then be orchestrated through UiPath Maestro, which provides governance and observability for workflows.

The company's Decision Ledger is designed to record decisions made throughout a process, including the reasons behind those decisions. Relevant decisions can subsequently be fed back into the Map of Work as operating knowledge or new rules.

UiPath said this creates a continuous improvement cycle in which the process map can evolve based on experience from actual operations.

“For years, businesses have digitized their data without ever capturing the enterprise context of how that data is actually put to work,” said Daniel Dines, Founder and CEO of UiPath.

“Map of Work is how we translate that gap into something concrete. A process map tells you how work is designed to run. UiPath Cartographer is the key to uncovering the operational knowledge of how that work actually runs, with every exception and every judgment call included,” he added.

The launch comes as enterprises increasingly combine AI agents, automation and orchestration with existing business workflows, making structured operational knowledge an important part of how organisations design, govern and continuously improve automated processes.
