Successful Pilot QR Code-Payment Transaction In The UAE Completed By Unionpay, Network International

Network International, the main enabler of digital commerce throughout the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, and Chinas UnionPay International have successfully carried out their first pilot QR code -based payment transaction at a merchant outlet in the UAE.

The pilot transaction follows UnionPay Internationals settlement previous year with Network International to allow about 10,000 merchant terminals in the UAE to support UnionPays QR code -based payment service. The initiative objectives to bring further comfort to UnionPay cardholders who use the UnionPay app, the companys secure, efficient and quick payment service.

Chinas multibillion dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has contributed to the country retaining its place as the UAEs largest trading partner for a number of years. More than 15.9 million Chinese visited the UAE in 2018, in accordance to Dubai Tourism figures, making UnionPay cards an increasingly essential tool for payments. UnionPay cards are presently accepted, online and offline, throughout the UAE. In 2018, trading volumes of the domestically issued UnionPay cards multiplied almost 20% year-on-year.
