Reem office of RAK Municipality highlights Ras Al Khaimah Integrated Sustainability Strategy 2050

Ras Al Khaimah is advancing its long-term sustainability agenda through the Ras Al Khaimah Integrated Sustainability (RIS) Strategy 2050, a comprehensive emirate-wide framework aimed at strengthening economic resilience, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring long-term energy and water security.

Developed under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, the RIS Strategy builds on the foundations of the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Strategy 2040 (EE&R Strategy). While the earlier strategy focused primarily on the emirate’s energy transition, the RIS Strategy broadens the scope to address wider sustainability priorities, including emissions reduction, climate adaptation, air quality, water and soil management, and biodiversity protection.

Andrea Di Gregorio, Executive Director of Reem, the Sustainable Energy Sector of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, said the strategy reflects the emirate’s commitment to balancing growth with environmental responsibility.

“The RIS Strategy 2050 reflects Ras Al Khaimah’s long-term vision to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility,” Di Gregorio said. “Its objectives are to ensure a secure and cost-competitive supply of energy and water, protect the emirate’s natural heritage and quality of life, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to prepare Ras Al Khaimah for a low-carbon global economy.”

The RIS Strategy is expected to deliver significant economic, social and environmental benefits, including positive GDP impact, lower energy and water costs, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and job creation across green industries. It strengthens and expands the energy efficiency programmes introduced under the EE&R Strategy, with deeper interventions planned for key sectors such as industry, government and transport.

The strategy also supports the transition to cleaner fuels and utilities, in line with the UAE’s target of achieving 50 per cent clean energy by 2050 and its national net-zero emissions commitments.

Beyond emissions reduction, the RIS Strategy aims to improve air, soil and water quality, protect terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and enhance biodiversity through conservation initiatives and the use of native plant species. These measures are designed to improve living and working conditions while reinforcing Ras Al Khaimah’s appeal as a destination for sustainable tourism and long-term investment.

The strategy is structured around 13 programmes covering gas supply enhancement, renewable energy deployment, air quality, soil and land preservation, freshwater resources, biodiversity, marine and coastal ecosystems, as well as sustainable communities, transport, agriculture and industrial decarbonisation.

A strong governance framework underpins implementation, led by the RAK Sustainability Committee established under Amiri Decree No. 8 of 2025. Key stakeholders include RAK Municipality, RAK Transport Authority, RAKGAS and the Environment Protection and Development Authority, with Reem providing advisory and implementation support.

As Ras Al Khaimah experiences rapid growth across industry, tourism and urban development, the RIS Strategy provides an opportunity to embed sustainability into new infrastructure, communities and buildings, enhancing the emirate’s attractiveness to investors, businesses, tourists and residents.

Progress under the strategy is outlined in the 2025 edition of the Ras Al Khaimah Annual Report. Further developments and partnerships are expected to be explored during the third edition of the RAK Energy Summit, scheduled to take place from November 25 to 27, 2026.
