Emirates Road to Add Two Lanes for Sharjah-Dubai Traffic, Cutting Peak-Hour Journeys by 25%

Motorists travelling from Sharjah towards Dubai will benefit from two additional lanes on a five-kilometre stretch of Emirates Road from Sunday, August 30, as authorities prepare for increased traffic following the end of the summer break.

The expansion, announced by Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), is expected to reduce journey times by up to 25 per cent during peak hours, improving traffic flow along one of the UAE’s busiest road corridors.

Road capacity to rise by 33%

The affected section of Emirates Road, in the direction of Wadi Al Amardi, will be expanded from six lanes to eight.

According to the RTA, the additional lanes will increase the road’s capacity from approximately 12,000 vehicles per hour to 16,000 vehicles per hour, representing a rise of around 33 per cent.

The improvement is particularly aimed at easing congestion for motorists travelling from Sharjah towards Wadi Al Amardi, a key route connecting Dubai with the Northern Emirates.

Expansion comes ahead of school reopening

The road upgrade comes as traffic between Sharjah and Dubai is expected to increase with the reopening of schools across the UAE on August 31.

The return of school buses, parents, teachers and daily commuters following the summer break is expected to put additional pressure on major routes connecting the two emirates.

By increasing capacity on the Emirates Road corridor, the latest project is intended to improve traffic movement during busy periods and support smoother daily commuting.

Emirates Road carries more than 240,000 vehicles daily

Emirates Road is a major transportation corridor linking Dubai with the Northern Emirates. The highway serves private vehicles as well as heavy trucks and provides connections to major roads, residential communities, industrial areas and logistics zones.

RTA data indicates that more than 240,000 vehicles travel on Emirates Road in both directions every day, highlighting the importance of maintaining adequate capacity along the route.

The latest expansion is part of wider efforts to accommodate growing traffic volumes as residential and commercial developments continue to expand along the corridor.

Further upgrades strengthen connectivity

Emirates Road has undergone several improvements in recent years to enhance capacity and connectivity.

These include a new access point to Al Awir 1, improvements to entry and exit points at various locations, and enhanced connections with Al Amardi Street and surrounding development areas.

The addition of two lanes is expected to further strengthen the corridor's ability to handle rising traffic demand while supporting smoother movement between Sharjah, Dubai and the Northern Emirates.
