Ras Al Khaimah launches food safety programme for home-based projects

Ras Al Khaimah Municipality has introduced a food control programme to enhance safety standards in home-based food businesses. The initiative aligns with the emirate’s Vision 2030 and takes a risk-based regulatory approach combining education, guidance, and long-term compliance.

Orwa Mudathir, Director of the Food Control Department, said the programme falls under the “Year of Community” initiative, helping families producing food at home meet approved health standards. “It is a structured regulatory programme that balances risk management with support for the growth of this sector,” he explained.

The municipality highlighted that this is the first participatory governance model in Ras Al Khaimah for food safety, with clearly defined roles for regulators and licence holders. A regulatory manual specifies minimum health and safety requirements tailored to home licences.

Inspections will follow a field-based risk assessment system, with violations addressed progressively—starting with reminders, then warnings, and fines if necessary. The programme encourages licence holders to take responsibility while providing guidance on best practices.

The initiative is being implemented in coordination with Ras Al Khaimah’s Department of Economic Development (DED). Last week, both entities held an awareness campaign for over 30 holders of the “Ras Al Ghad” home licence, providing advice on preventive measures, licensing requirements, and business sustainability. Aisha Obaid Al Ayyan, DED Director of Business Development, said additional workshops will be held to reinforce food safety standards in the home-based food and beverage sector.
