Hamdan Centre for Giftedness and Innovation students win Dubai FIRST LEGO League Championship

Students from the Hamdan Centre for Giftedness and Innovation, part of the Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences, have won top honours at the Dubai-level FIRST LEGO League Championship, held at Metropole School with the participation of 85 teams from schools and educational institutions across the Emirate.

The Centre’s students delivered standout performances across multiple categories, reflecting their advanced skills in science, technology, engineering, and innovation. The competition brought together young talents to demonstrate excellence in robotics, design thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Dr Mariam Al Ghawi, Director of Hamdan Centre for Giftedness and Innovation, said the achievement highlights the strength of the Centre’s educational programmes and the scientific and innovative capabilities of its students. She noted that the results reaffirm the Centre’s commitment to providing applied, experiential learning environments that help students develop analytical thinking, teamwork, and practical problem-solving skills while bridging theory with real-world application.

Dr Al Ghawi added that participation in the FIRST LEGO League aligns with the Centre’s vision to prepare a new generation of innovators capable of competing in scientific and technological forums and contributing to the UAE’s transition towards a knowledge- and innovation-based economy.

The first student team was crowned overall champion, securing first place in the Robot Performance category and achieving the highest score recorded at the local competition level in the UAE. The team included Khaled Mohammed Al Amadi, Hamdan Rashid Baljafla, Abdullah Fahad Al Mahmoud, Abdulkarim Yousuf Bu Khashm, and Sayed Mansour Sayed Hassan Al Hashemi.

Meanwhile, the second student team claimed second place in the Robot Design category, following strong competition that showcased advanced engineering innovation and design thinking skills. The team members were Zayed Jassim Al Banna, Sheikh Dhiab bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, and Issa Yousuf Bu Khashm.

The Centre’s participation in the FIRST LEGO League forms part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to support gifted students and enhance their capabilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on learning experiences that foster creativity, collaboration, and innovation, while preparing students to compete successfully at local and international levels.
