FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem to Meet Paraguayan President During FIA American Congress
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), will meet with Paraguayan President Santiago Peña to discuss global motorsport development and mobility issues during the FIA American Congress 2025, taking place in Asunción, Paraguay.
The congress, which President Peña will officially inaugurate on August 25, will gather mobility and motorsport leaders from across the Americas to address critical topics such as road safety, sustainable mobility, regional sporting growth, and transport innovation.
Hosted by the Touring y Automóvil Club Paraguayo (TACPy), the three-day event marks a historic milestone for Paraguayan motorsport, as the country makes its debut on the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar. The Rally del Paraguay, set in the Itapúa region, will run from 28–31 August.
Strengthening Global Motorsport and Mobility
Speaking ahead of his visit, Ben Sulayem emphasized the importance of collaboration:
“I am delighted to be joining our members and partners in Asunción for the FIA American Congress 2025, and I look forward to meeting with President Peña to discuss our combined efforts to drive global motorsport participation and safe, accessible mobility.
This gathering is a vital opportunity to strengthen collaboration across the Americas, share expertise in mobility and motorsport, and advance our shared priorities of safety, sustainability and innovation.”
He also highlighted Paraguay’s first-ever appearance on the WRC calendar as a significant moment for both the country and the region:
“Hosting the congress alongside Paraguay’s debut on the FIA World Rally Championship calendar makes this a truly historic moment for the country and the region as we continue to develop global motorsport, inspire our fans across the world, and welcome new audiences to the rally community.”
Key Congress Themes
Themed “Safe Mobility and Motorsport in the Americas”, this year’s FIA American Congress will focus on four priority areas:
-
Road safety and traffic education
-
Innovation and emerging technologies in mobility
-
Global motorsport growth
-
The role of automobile clubs in social transformation
The event programme features knowledge-sharing sessions to equip FIA Member Clubs with strategies on evolving mobility trends, sustainable practices, and consumer-focused innovation.
FIA Membership and Global Reach
The FIA governs both motorsport and mobility organizations worldwide through its Member Club structure, which forms the backbone of its governance. Each full Member Club holds voting rights in FIA elections and regulatory decisions, and clubs are grouped into two main categories:
-
Mobility Clubs – focusing on road safety, tourism, consumer rights, and sustainable mobility.
-
National Sporting Authorities (ASNs) – governing and developing motorsport at the national level, including event regulation and licensing.
The FIA is organized into four Mobility Regions and six Sport Zones. The American Congress will welcome clubs from FIA Regions III and IV, representing members across North, Central, and South America.
Globally, the FIA represents 245 clubs in 149 countries, connecting over 80 million members.
