FIA President H.E. Mohammed Ben Sulayem met with Chilean President H.E. José Antonio Kast in Santiago to strengthen cooperation between the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Chilean Government across mobility, road safety and motorsport.
The meeting, held on August 27, focused on shared priorities including improving road safety, supporting sustainable transport and creating new opportunities for the development of motorsport in Chile.
The discussions come as South America prepares to host the FIA World Rally Championship in Paraguay and the FIA’s American Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentina, bringing together FIA Member Clubs from across the region.
Chile Joins United Against Online Abuse Coalition
A key outcome of the meeting was Chile's signing of the FIA's United Against Online Abuse (UAOA) charter.
Founded in 2023 by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the coalition brings together governments, sporting federations and technology companies to combat online abuse and promote a safer, more inclusive and respectful environment across sport.
With Chile's addition, 14 governments are now members of the coalition.
Ben Sulayem welcomed Chile's decision, saying the country's participation strengthens the shared commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive sporting environment.
Focus on Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility
The FIA President also outlined the organisation's work on improving road safety through data-driven initiatives, including the FIA Road Safety Index (RSI) and FIA Driver Safety Index (DSI).
The programmes provide governments, organisations and road users with tools to measure, benchmark and improve road safety performance, supporting efforts to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries.
The meeting also highlighted the role of the Automóvil Club de Chile (ACCHI) in promoting safer and more sustainable mobility across the country.
ACCHI, led by President Alejandro Quintana, recently became one of nine new FIA Member Clubs to adopt the FIA DSI. The initiative uses technology and data to help organisations understand and manage driver risk.
Through the FIA Safe and Sustainable Mobility Grants Programme and the FIA Safe Mobility For All and For Life international programme, ACCHI is also using internationally recognised tools to assess road infrastructure around schools and support safer journeys for children.
The organisation is additionally developing a digital platform aimed at raising public awareness of key mobility issues and strengthening engagement with the Chilean public.
Motorsport Seen as Driver of Growth
The discussions also examined opportunities to further develop motorsport in Chile and the role the sector can play in promoting safety, innovation, economic growth and tourism.
Ben Sulayem highlighted Chile's motorsport heritage and its potential to expand its role within the international motorsport community.
The FIA President also acknowledged the work of the Federación Chilena de Automovilismo Deportivo (FADECH), the FIA's sporting Member in Chile, in supporting the continued development of motorsport in the country.
The meeting reflects broader efforts by the FIA and Chilean authorities to strengthen cooperation across mobility and motorsport while advancing safer, more sustainable and accessible transport.
