Beneath the Bonnet: Inside Freelander’s High-Tech Super Factory in Changshu

Jaguar Land Rover’s first full vehicle production facility outside the UK is offering a glimpse into the technology and engineering behind the all-new Freelander 8, ahead of its Middle East launch later this year.

Located in Changshu, the Freelander Super Factory represents an investment of more than $3.1 billion, including major upgrades for intelligent new-energy vehicle manufacturing. The facility combines Jaguar Land Rover’s engineering heritage with Chery’s advanced manufacturing capabilities.

The factory operates with more than 1,100 intelligent robots, which handle processes ranging from welding and component assembly to the installation of doors, engines, chassis components and body panels. Automated systems work alongside engineers and technicians to maintain extremely precise production standards.

Rather than replacing human expertise, the automation is designed to enhance it. Engineers use sophisticated digital tools to monitor manufacturing tolerances measured in fractions of a millimetre, while digital quality-control systems track each vehicle throughout the production process.

Rigorous Testing Before Delivery

Quality checks extend well beyond the assembly line. Every Freelander 8 undergoes extensive testing before leaving the factory, including simulated heavy rainfall, battery sealing assessments, advanced driver-assistance system calibration and electronic verification.

The testing programme is designed to ensure vehicles can meet demanding conditions in international markets, including the UAE and wider Middle East.

Focus on Sustainable Manufacturing

Sustainability is also incorporated into the factory’s operations. Intelligent energy-management systems, water recycling and low-carbon production technologies form part of the facility’s manufacturing approach.

The combination of automation, digital monitoring and human expertise provides a detailed look at how modern premium vehicles are increasingly produced through highly integrated manufacturing ecosystems.

Preparing for the Middle East

The factory visit comes ahead of the Freelander 8’s Middle East launch later this year. For the journalists who toured the facility, the experience offered an opportunity to see the production process behind the vehicle before experiencing it on the road.
