Dubai Supreme Council of Energy addresses latest updates in Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, headed the Supreme Council's 41st conference. Present were HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Energy, Abdullah bin Kalban, CEO and Managing Director of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of Emirates National Oil Company Ltd (ENOC), Abdullah Abdul Kareem, Director General of the Department of Oil Affairs, Waleed Salman, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Nuclear Energy Committee, and Fred Chemin, Head of Production Development at the Dubai Petroleum Establishment.

The conference addressed the latest updates of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Carbon Abatement Strategy, along with other present projects and initiatives.

"We went over the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which shapes the energy sector in Dubai over the next three years. The strategy aims to offer 7% of Dubai's energy from clean energy sources by 2020. This target will enhance to 25% by 2030, and to 75% by 2050. Dubai is the only city in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to introduce such a promising strategy, with particular targets and deadlines that describe the future of energy in Dubai, up until 2050," stated Al Tayer.

"We also discussed Dubai's Carbon Abatement Strategy, which aims to establish an effective framework in reducing carbon emissions in Dubai in support of the Dubai Plan 2021. Dubai handled to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 5 million tonnes, equivalent to a 9% reduction, exceeding the 7% target for 2015," added Al Tayer.

Dubai Municipality highlighted its plans for treating waste through a number of key projects. These consist of converting methane gas discharged from garbage dumps into energy, recovering drainage gas and transforming it into energy, burning solid waste to produce energy, in addition to other sustainability projects.

DEWA highlighted its cooperation with the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Clean Coal Centre, as a sponsor. DEWA will have access to the centre's know-how, which includes consultancy services, study reports, analysis, workshops, conferences, and databases.
