Wolverine retains light heavyweight title in Power Slap’s first-ever sudden-death fight in Abu Dhabi
The UAE capital witnessed a historic night of combat sports as Power Slap 16: Wolverine vs Klingbeil, presented by Monster Energy, delivered a thrilling showcase at Space42 Arena during Abu Dhabi Showdown Week.
In a record-breaking main event, Wolverine successfully defended his Light Heavyweight Championship against Alan “The Kryptonian” Klingbeil in what became the first-ever sudden-death title fight in Power Slap history. The bout ended in a split decision (57–56 Klingbeil, 57–56 Wolverine, 57–56 Wolverine), cementing Wolverine’s status as one of the sport’s most dominant athletes.
UFC President Dana White hailed the contest as “the best match in Power Slap history,” praising both fighters for their endurance and determination. The intense back-and-forth battle kept spectators on edge until the final decisive slap.
In the co-main event, Makini “Big Mak” Manu (29–28, 29–28, 29–28) secured a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over Vasilii “Dumpling” Kamotskii, following a gritty three-round contest that showcased the heart and resilience of both competitors.
Power Slap CEO Frank Lamicella described the night as a landmark for the sport, emphasizing the significance of the new sudden-death rule.
“The main event between Wolverine and Klingbeil was probably the best match we’ve ever had in Power Slap. It was the first title fight to go into a sudden-victory round, and the energy in the arena proved we made the right decision introducing it,” he said.
Lamicella also highlighted the sport’s growing international appeal, noting that fighters from eight countries, including India, participated for the first time.
“We’re seeing increasing interest from this region and local talent. Hosting Power Slap events in the Middle East helps us discover new fighters and expand our global reach,” he added.
Speaking after his victory, Wolverine expressed gratitude for the support of fans and recognition from Dana White.
“The crowd was incredible—on their feet the whole time. Hearing Dana call it the best match in Power Slap history means a lot,” he said.
Makini “Big Mak” Manu also reflected on his win, saying:
“I feel great—though my wrist hurts. It was a hard-hitting fight, and I’m just blessed to have had this opportunity. It felt like a real super-heavyweight title fight.”
Following the success of Power Slap 16, attention now turns to UFC 321: Aspinall vs Gane, taking place tonight at Etihad Arena, Yas Island, continuing an unforgettable week of combat sports in Abu Dhabi.
