Sheikh Zayed Book Awards Scientific Committee Begins Work In Abu Dhabi

The Scientific Committee of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award the annual literary accolades established in honour of the later UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, is convening in the UAE capital this week as part of its eighth session.

The Committees agenda includes assessing reports submitted by the Awards judging panel per category and the evaluation of nominated works to finalise the short-listed winners. The list will then be subject to the Awards Board of Trustees approval by next week.

Dr. Ali Bin Tamim, Sheikh Zayed Book Awards Secretary General will lead the discussions. Hell be joined by committee members Dr. Khalil Al Shaikh, Professor of Arabic language and Literature in Yarmouk University Jordan; Dr. Saeed Tawfiq, Professor of Contemporary Philosophy and Aesthetics in the Faculty of Literature in Cairo University Egypt; Dr. Mohammad Bennis, the renowned poet and Professor of Modern Poetry in University of Mohammad the Fifth Morocco; Dr. Kadhim Jihad, Professor of Arabic Literature and Comparative Literature in the National Institute of Languages and Oriental Civilizations France; Dr. Siham Al Foreih, the Scholar and Critic from Kuwait; Dr. Masoud Dhaher, Professor of Social History In the Lebanese University Lebanon; Mr. Juergen Boos, President of Frankfurt International Book Fair Germany; Ms. Noura Al Kaabi, CEO of twofour54 Abu Dhabi and Mr. Saeed Hamdan, the Awards General Manager.

Dr. Bin Tamim says the Awards eighth session has received 1,385 nominations which is 12% up on last year with a widening in the variety of submitted works in nine categories.

With the conclusion of the judging panels work, we will begin assessment and evaluation of filtered works across all categories against a stringent scoring criterion said Dr. Bin Tamim. The assessment results will then be calculated for each category and collectively evaluated to be filtered down to the short-listed winners, which are in turn subject to the approval of the Awards Board of Trustees, headed by HE Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority.

The full winners list is due to be announced at a press conference in April, to be followed by Awards Grand Ceremony, celebrating the winning achievements on May 4th to coincide with the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.

Award nominations were received from May until mid-October last year in categories covering; Contribution to the Development of Nations; Literature; Childrens Literature [including adolescent books]; Young Author; Translation; and Literary and Art Criticism.

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award fosters greater scholarship and creativity by recognising and rewarding significant cultural achievements in Arabic culture.
