How is smartphone use affecting family connections during Ramadan 2026 in the UAE?

Experts warn that “digital isolation” is quietly growing in UAE households this Ramadan as more people scroll through their phones—even during iftar. According to Dr Nashwa Tantawy, constant phone use at the dinner table distracts families, weakening emotional bonds and mirroring addictive behaviour. Research links heavy screen time to anxiety, social withdrawal, and a communication breakdown—especially as parents, often the biggest users, inadvertently model these habits to children. To counter this, Dr Tantawy suggests collective family rules like placing phones in a basket before iftar, limiting notifications, and encouraging Ramadan-themed activities that promote kindness and generosity. Supporting this view, Dr Amal Salem Basohaib describes the phenomenon as a “crisis of presence,” where family members are physically together but emotionally detached. Both experts emphasize that technology isn’t the enemy—mindful use and meaningful in-person engagement are the keys to restoring connection during the holy month.
