While recent snowfall in Saudi Arabia has sparked excitement across the region, experts say snow in the UAE remains extremely rare but not impossible. According to Dr Ahmed Habib from the National Centre of Meteorology, snow requires very specific conditions — high elevation, low upper-atmosphere temperatures, and moisture-bearing clouds. In the UAE, these factors usually produce hail or icy rain rather than snow. However, the country has witnessed snow before — most memorably in 2009 and again in 2020 on Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah, when temperatures dipped below zero. With winter weather intensifying this year, could we see another rare snowy surprise in the mountains soon?
