Are your hands sore from scrolling? You might have ‘WhatsAppitis’ — what is it and who’s at risk?

UAE doctors are warning about a rise in phone-related hand pain known as WhatsAppitis, a repetitive strain injury caused by excessive messaging and scrolling. First documented in 2014, this condition now affects children and adults alike, especially those using smartphones for 5-6+ hours a day. Orthopaedic specialists say this overuse can lead to thumb tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, often seen in young adults and students. The problem is worse with larger devices and among people with joint issues. Doctors recommend using grips, voice-to-text, alternating hands, and taking regular breaks. Have you experienced wrist or thumb pain due to phone use? How do you manage your screen time? Let us know your thoughts!
