Atika bint Zaid School in Khorfakkan earned the title of ‘Distinguished School’ at the 9th Arab Reading Challenge, receiving a Dh1 million prize for its exceptional efforts to make reading a genuine daily culture — not just a competition. From the start, the school’s leadership built a structured plan with 73 initiatives under five main pillars, engaging teachers, parents, senior citizens, and even people of determination to instil a love for reading. Creative ideas like the ‘Reader’s Passport’, ‘Reading Ambassador’, and weekly reading ceremonies kept students motivated, while teacher training and parent involvement ensured sustainability. Principal Hind Ahmed Al Shehhi said their mission was to create “a generation of readers and thinkers” rather than to chase awards — though victory naturally followed. The result? Improved student confidence, stronger writing skills, and a thriving reading environment recognised across the Arab world.
