Sheikh Abdulrahman Al Shafei Al Madani, widely regarded as Dubai's first tailor, has passed away at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy that helped shape the emirate's heritage. Beginning in 1947 with a modest tailoring shop in Al Ras, Deira, he initially stitched protective diving suits for pearl divers before becoming renowned for crafting traditional Emirati kanduras. Over nearly eight decades, his business grew from a single Creekside shop into a network of tailoring outlets across the UAE, while his dedication, humility and craftsmanship earned him the title "Sheikh of Tailors." Remembering his grandfather, filmmaker Abdulrahman Al Madani described him as a generous, hardworking man whose journey from humble beginnings inspired generations and reflected Dubai's own remarkable transformation.
