Under the UAE’s Federal Decree Law No. 50 of 2022 (Commercial Transactions Law) and the Montreal Convention, airlines can be held responsible for damages caused by flight delays. However, if cancellations occur due to extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline’s control — such as war, armed conflict, airspace closures or government security directives — the airline may not be legally required to pay additional compensation. In such cases, passengers are generally entitled to remedies outlined in the ticket’s terms and conditions, which may include refunds, rebooking on another flight, or travel credits. While airlines must take reasonable measures to minimise disruption, their liability for delay-related damages is limited under the convention. Have you ever faced a flight cancellation due to external events like weather or conflict, and were you satisfied with the airline’s refund or rebooking policy?
