Al Gaffal Traditional Dhow Sailing Race
Over 3,000 sailors to compete in iconic race from Sir Bu Na’air Island to Dubai shoreline
Dubai: The Al Gaffal Traditional Dhow Sailing Race, a cornerstone of the UAE’s maritime heritage, is set to sail once again on 2 May. This year’s edition will see more than 3,000 seasoned sailors manning over 120 traditional 60-foot dhows in a grand display of seamanship and national pride. The fleet will navigate from the historic Sir Bu Na’air Island to Dubai’s coast, retracing a route that echoes the UAE’s pearl-diving and seafaring legacy.
A celebration of both sport and culture, the event will feature a series of traditional showcases and activities designed to engage families, heritage lovers, and curious visitors alike. The Al Sinyar Maritime Heritage Museum will host immersive exhibitions, while craft workshops will offer hands-on experiences in rosary crafting, mirror-making, and candle-making using seashells.
Visitors can also enjoy a vibrant cultural village with live music performances, a luxury car display, and traditional demonstrations of perfume blending, weaving, pottery, palm frond braiding, rope making, and textile stitching.
For families, there will be a dedicated children’s play area, giveaways, and exciting competitions such as Al Matarah (wrestling), Al Karabi (boat rowing), Al Mayet (swimming), and Al Shaab (heritage games) that preserve and celebrate Emirati sporting traditions.
