Skywatchers in the UAE are in for a celestial treat this April with two major astronomical events lighting up the night sky: the Pink Moon and a meteor shower.

What Is the Pink Moon?

The so-called "Pink Moon" will rise on April 13 at approximately 7:08 PM and set at 5:56 AM the following morning. Despite its name, the moon will not actually appear pink in color. The term originates from Native American traditions, referring to the first full moon of spring and the seasonal bloom of pink wildflowers, particularly phlox, one of the earliest springtime blossoms in North America.

Why It’s Called a Micromoon This Year

This year’s Pink Moon also qualifies as a micromoon. A micromoon occurs when the full moon is at or near its farthest point from Earth in its elliptical orbit, known as the apogee. As a result, the moon appears smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon, especially compared to a supermoon, which occurs when the moon is closest to Earth.

Meteor Shower to Illuminate UAE Skies

In addition to the Pink Moon, stargazers can expect a meteor shower this month, providing a dazzling display of shooting stars. These bright streaks of light are caused by tiny particles of ice, rock, and metal—remnants from the early formation of the solar system around 4.6 billion years ago—burning up as they enter Earth’s atmosphere.

The UAE’s clear desert skies make it an ideal location to witness these cosmic events. For the best meteor shower viewing experience, enthusiasts are encouraged to head to areas with minimal light pollution, such as desert outskirts or high-altitude spots.

Timing: The Pink Moon will be visible from just after sunset on April 13 until early morning on April 14. The meteor shower can be best seen after midnight, when the sky is darkest.
