What Makes Indian Mangoes the UAE's Summer Favourite?
As temperatures rise across the UAE, so does the appetite for Indian mangoes, a seasonal staple that signals the arrival of summer. From the creamy Alphonso to the tangy Kesar and versatile Totapuri, Indian mangoes flood UAE supermarkets from April to July, driving both culinary joy and billion-dirham trade between India and the Emirates.
According to trade figures, the UAE imported 15,336 metric tonnes of Indian mangoes during the 2023–24 financial year, making it India’s largest overseas mango market. This overwhelming demand is not only due to the large South Asian expatriate population but also growing appreciation from locals and other nationalities who value premium tropical fruits.
A Fruitful Lineup: King of Mangoes and More
Leading the seasonal charge is the Alphonso — known as Hapus in Maharashtra — revered for its rich aroma and velvety sweetness. Despite higher price points, Alphonsos are top sellers across leading retail chains in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The Kesar mango, grown in Gujarat, follows close behind with its golden hue and perfect blend of sweet and tangy notes. Favoured by families for its fragrance and balance, Kesar has carved its own loyal fan base.
Meanwhile, Totapuri mangoes, known for their firmer texture, offer culinary versatility. Popular in both fresh servings and cooked dishes, their extended shelf life makes them a favourite among restaurants and large retailers alike.
Beyond the Big Three: Hidden Gems of Indian Orchards
Other Indian mango varieties are gaining traction as well:
-
Dasheri mangoes bring an elongated shape and syrupy sweetness that appeals to mango connoisseurs.
-
Raja Puri, smaller in size but big on flavour, are preferred by budget-conscious families seeking taste without a hefty price tag.
-
Badami, hailing from Karnataka, is prized for its buttery flesh and golden glow, making it a luxury pick in high-end fruit boutiques.
-
Langra, with its subtle appearance and vibrant flavour, wins over those who prioritize taste over looks.
-
Baseri mangoes add to the mix with their distinct traditional sweetness.
Seamless Supply and Market Dominance
The Indian mango season in the UAE is tightly coordinated with India’s harvest calendar. Shipments begin in March, peaking from April to July, ensuring UAE shelves remain stocked with the freshest varieties. Many retailers offer pre-ordering options through online platforms and specialty stores to manage demand.
Despite competition from Pakistan, Yemen, Thailand, Peru, and Colombia, Indian mangoes continue to dominate the market due to strong bilateral trade agreements, reliable logistics, and Dubai’s central role as a re-export hub for regional markets.
Dubai’s Waterfront Market plays a crucial role in this ecosystem, equipped with advanced ripening chambers and cold storage systems to preserve fruit quality across its vast distribution network.
A Growing Appetite for Organic and Premium Quality
UAE consumers are increasingly leaning towards organic mangoes, reflecting broader health trends across the region. Several importers now offer certified organic Indian mangoes, meeting the demand of health-conscious shoppers.
This growing appetite positions the UAE not just as a consumer base, but a key player in the global mango trade, connecting the orchards of India with tables across the Middle East and beyond.
