UAE to Salalah: Best Time to Visit, Visa Details, and Travel Costs for Khareef 2025
Every summer, thousands of UAE citizens and expatriates travel to Salalah, Oman’s Dhofar region, to experience the Khareef season — a time of refreshing monsoon rains, cooler temperatures, and lush green landscapes.
Best Time to Visit
According to Dr Ahmed Al Ghassani, Mayor of Dhofar, the Khareef season officially begins on June 21 and runs until September 20, with July being the peak period for greenery and celebrations. “Even if the rainfall arrives late, it typically takes two to three weeks for the earth to turn completely green,” Dr Al Ghassani told Khaleej Times.
Visa Requirements and Costs
Dr Al Ghassani recommends applying online via the Royal Oman Police eVisa portal for a smoother travel experience.
Travel Routes
Travellers from the UAE commonly use land routes via Hatta, Al Ain, and other northern emirates. Others prefer flying directly to Salalah or driving to Sohar or Muscat before continuing by bus.
Visitor Numbers and Growth Plans
In 2023, Salalah welcomed around 1 million visitors during Khareef, with UAE residents forming the largest group of GCC travellers, followed by those from Saudi Arabia. The Dhofar municipality aims to increase overall tourist numbers by 10% annually over the next three years through new infrastructure projects and hotel expansions.
Hotel Capacity and New Markets
Several new hotels and resorts are set to open during this Khareef and the upcoming winter season. The region is also targeting new tourist markets, including Russia and China, to diversify its visitor base. Some hotels last year hit 100% occupancy at the peak of the season.
