UAE Residents Turn Balconies and Backyards Into Cosy Winter Hangouts

As temperatures continue to cool across the UAE, many residents are transforming their balconies, terraces and backyards into inviting winter retreats—allowing families to enjoy the season’s pleasant evenings without stepping outside their homes.

In Al Ain, Emirati resident Maha A. shared that her family builds a traditional winter tent every year. “We spend most winter evenings there, whether it is friends gathering, family time or simply relaxing with karak and coffee,” she said. The tents, which cost between Dh1,800 and Dh12,000 depending on size and quality, are carefully chosen based on fabric, colour and layout. Many families further personalise their spaces with carpets, cushions and even chandeliers to create a warm, comfortable atmosphere.

In Dubai, residents are also embracing seasonal home makeovers. Lebanese expat Marwa Aalim converts her balcony—used mainly as a laundry area in summer—into a cosy winter lounge with bean bags, warm lighting and a small swing. “It becomes the designated chill area during winter. We even had a movie night outdoors once,” she said, noting that she opts for budget-friendly décor so she can refresh the space annually.

Another Dubai resident, Shams Mubarak, allocates a dedicated winter budget for enhancing both his balcony and backyard. Living on the first floor gives his family access to a larger outdoor area, where he sets up games for his children along with a full seating arrangement. For him, the aim is to create an enjoyable outdoor space that allows the family to spend quality time together without going out every evening.

From tents to balcony makeovers, UAE residents are embracing the winter spirit by turning their homes into seasonal havens—celebrating comfort, creativity and outdoor living.
