ENOC to provide environment-friendly Euro 5 diesel from July 1 at no extra cost

Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) will distribute the environment-friendly, ultra-low-sulphur Euro 5 diesel at its service stations from July 1, 2014, in accordance with the new regulation by the Emirates Authority for Standards & Metrology (ESMA), the UAEs sole standardisation body, to reduce motor vehicle pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and to promote environmental sustainability.

ENOC is absorbing the additional cost that is involved in distributing Euro 5 diesel compared to traditional diesel, as part of its commitment to encourage people to adopt the use of environment-friendly fuels and thus contribute to the UAEs green vision.

Saeed Khoory, Chief Executive Officer of ENOC, said: The UAE is setting a global benchmark with ESMAs new recommendation to use the cleaner Euro 5 diesel. This is a significant step in the countrys concerted efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and promote environmental sustainability. By adopting the cleaner and greener diesel, motorists can contribute to reduced carbon, particulates and greenhouse gas emissions.

He added: ENOC has always been at the forefront in promoting green technologies and services. As part of our corporate social responsibility commitment, we are also absorbing the extra cost involved in distributing Euro 5 diesel to further popularise its use by motorists. Together, we can contribute to achieving the green economy for sustainable development vision announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

The Euro 5 diesel, which has ultra-low sulphur content of 10 ppm compared to 500 ppm in traditional diesel, will be made available at ENOC/EPPCO service stations in phases. It will be introduced from July 1 at key service stations located within the city before expanding to all stations across the network.

Set by the European Union, the Euro 5 standard diesel ensures that emissions from vehicles are limited and are significantly less than emissions when using conventional fuels.

Highlighting its commitment to environmental sustainability, ENOC was the first in the region to open a green service station, which uses latest technology to recover 99 per cent of the vapour from the dispensers and storage tanks, and has solar powered lampposts and LED lights with a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours.

ENOC has introduced low SAPS (sulphated ash, phosphorous and sulphur) engine oils, and high quality lubricants offering superior oil drain period, engine cleanliness and engine life, contributing to lesser emissions.

Emirates Gas (EMGAS), a subsidiary of ENOC, has also introduced several environment-friendly measures including the Cutting Edge Gas (CEG), a new generation product that provides customers with a convenient, cost-effective fuel gas for cutting applications.

EMGAS is also taking the lead in popularising the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner and greener fuel, which reduces carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide emissions, and practically eliminates sulphur and particulate emissions. ESMA has officially nominated ENOC and EMGAS as the executors of CNG activities in the UAE.

Recently, ENOC won the CSR Label Award presented by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry for excellence in undertaking initiatives that make a difference to the community and the world. ENOC has won Asias top laurel for Best Corporate Social Responsibility Practices at the Asian Leadership Awards; and The Bizz Award, one of the most prestigious business awards world-wide, for outstanding corporate social responsibility practices.
