What is Autism?

Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication.
Every child with ASD will have unique behavioral patterns and levels of severity, which range from low-functioning to high-functioning. With age, some children with ASD show fewer behavioral disturbances and engage more with others.

Khalid's Experiment

Khalid Al Ameri is a popular Emirati Vlogger with a wide reach on all social media platforms. Ahead of the World Autism Awareness Day, Khalid posted a video sharing his travel experience from UAE to Bahrain with his family that includes his son Abdullah, who is on the autism spectrum.

Khalid, in his eye-opening video, tells the world how an international travel code made things much better for him and his family. 

Khalid used the ticket code DPNA, which is for a passenger with developmental or intellectual disability. This made the check-in, immigration, boarding and seating much easier and the whole travelling experience memorable for them all. The DPNA code gives priority to families travelling with a child of determination. 

Khalid further pointed out that a large majority of people were still unaware of such a code that could be of great use to such families. He himself showed the world that parents need not panic about travelling with a child on the autistic spectrum if handled properly.
